Risk Reduction Counselor Trainee

Was born in 1966 in the small city of Blumenau, in the southern state
of Santa Catarina in Brazil. I was the youngest of 8 children living in a small house with two working parents, siblings, and my aunt. I left home at 17 to study Psychology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Florianopolis, the state capital. After achieving my Psychologist Licensure in 1989, I completed a specialization in Systemic Therapy. These degrees and specialization required many hours of psychotherapy practice, but I never actually practiced as a psychologist in Brazil. Despite my training my first job was as a recruiter in the Human Resources department of a fabric factory back in my hometown.
In 1994, I moved to San Francisco, California, where I had various jobs and moved to Miami in 1998 to become a Flight Attendant with American Airlines and flew, most often, to and from Brazil. I decided to return to Healthcare and graduated from Miami-Dade ColleIge as a Registered Nurse. I have been working with individuals living with HIV as a Medical Case Manager from 2006 until the present. Something of all my various experiences moved me to return to psychology but as a nurse, so I am currently completing a Master’s degree at Walden University to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
I think my upbringing and many subsequent experiences - my college training and licensure as a Psychologist in Brazil, immigrating to the United States, working as a flight attendant, becoming a nurse and working with HIV - have all led to this present moment when I am training to work in Mental Health in a new role and capacity. I am extremely excited to join this clinic to that end.
